Can We Resurrect Common Sense?

On my profile page, I've mentioned that I have an interest in unlocking the mystery of where in this world Common Courtesy, and Common Sense have gone.
I've been searching for them, desperately trying to find them, trying to understand why they left our society in the first place.
I haven't given up in my efforts to find Common Courtesy and bring her out of hiding, but sadly it looks as though there's no hope for Common Sense.
Maybe we could resurrect him? What do you think?

(a big shout out goes to cutie patootie
Hunter Bug for posting this on her blog...I LOVE a smart teen with a sense of humor!)

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by:
his parents, Truth and Trust
by his wife, Discretion
by his daughter, Responsibility
and by his son, Reason

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:

I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
and, I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Hunter and I were watching Glenn Beck the other day and heard him give this "eulogy" to common sense. She was so taken with it that she went and googled it and shares it with all her friends. It's so funny how someone who's so young even recognizes how bad the world has gotten. I don't know who originally wrote it, but it's "dead" on!!

Couldn't agree more.
Your observations on my son were right on target. Quite astute, I must say. He is a gem, just an opal, one not appreciated by all, but valuable in his own right.

Oh man. It's funny because it's true. It's uber depressing because it's true too.
Ouch.

the latest...little league baseball...you (players of opposing team) now cannot say anything "negative" to the pitcher, the other team, i.e. "We want a pitcher, not a belly itcher." umm babe, umm babe, STRIKE!" Might "scar" the child for life!
Don't reward kids in a classroom for mastering a skill, a scripture, completing a task, good performance...absolutely not you cannot have "costume parades with prizes", "no one can find the only 'golden' egg..."do not instill any competitiveness among the children."

I know, I know...to some I have now, not only treaded, but stomped on sacred ground. Personally, I think the above are victims of the demise of "Common Sense."
Common Sense, once upon a time, taught things like...the best man MAY just win...or better yet, sometimes he just MIGHT NOT! DEAL with IT....build a bridge in life and get the heck over it!

Things like, there will always be someone bigger, better, smarter, prettier, funnier, happier, richer, and on and on than you...just hope you don't meet the person who is all of the above in the competition! :)

Common Sense used to teach kids, who then grew up into adults, to take what they have in life and learn to cope....not so much anymore.

So long old friend...we are missing you!

Keep the search going for Courtesy, maybe her staying power is a little stronger...especially if mothers still want their children to learn about her!

So true, So true!! I agree with Snarky Mama (of course). I wonder when it will all come back to bite us you know where! How can we expect our kids to roll with the punches, pick themselves up and go on if we stop all opposition.

Common sense please come back!!
