While they may not be "prized" possessions (because they aren't priceless), I do have things that I love. And if those things were lost or destroyed, I would be sad. But not devastated. I wish I could say this is because I'm simply noble that way....I've lost a lot in my life that can never be replaced, I clearly understand what's most important. While that is certainly true, it's not the reason I don't get attached to material items.
There are two (far less noble) reasons:
(1.) An incident that occurred when I was around 12. It involved my little brother, a very AWESOME Swatch watch (that most likely each of my parents had to sell a kidney in order to buy), and a garbage truck that came up the street before we realized where that very AWESOME Swatch watch was. That didn't end well. I learned to never become overly attached to things. (2.) And the other reason...have I mentioned that I really do hate clutter?
Here are some possessions I don't necessarily "prize", but I do love:
It ended with:
- all of them piled on top of my bed
- rolling around like pigs in mud
- my yelling, "Don't trash my bed. How rude. If you wanna trash a bed, go trash your own bed."
My twelve year old son and six year old daughter laughed at me, shook their heads and went about their business. They respected the unspoken, "You shouldn't trash any beds at all, and all three of you know that!! I'm simply trying to make a point."
My nine year old son had other ideas. Having other ideas is not uncommon for him. With that boy, you've really gotta choose your words carefully. If you say something, you better mean it.
He even had the nerve to laughingly say, "Well it's your fault, you told me to do it." Yes, the flat sheet ended up under the bed and the skirt was completely crumpled underneath everything else. Did he care that he had to remake the bed he'd already made that morning? Of course not! Hope he doesn't consider his bed a "prized" possession, because I'm throwin' it out if he pulls that stunt again!

Oh gosh...I feel a Natalie anxiety attack coming on looking at Middle son's bed!! Hey...I know that bed....and it was perfectly made when I saw it.
I enjoy throwing things out too but I have a bit of a collector in me. I think it comes from years of getting things and realizing I may not ever get them again so I save it all just in case.
I have a lot of stuff that has meaning. I'm so glad that I brought it along with me because I didn't think I would survive living here. But then I put out all my stuff and it felt right...like home...like me. There is a story behind everything I own. Just ask Ronna. As she was helping me pack, and I'm sure she thought my stashes were crazy...I told her the story for every single thing she packed. It was funny. I should probably blog about it.
But I also know that if I lost it all tomorrow, it wouldn't matter. Things just don't matter.
Another similarity, Friend.
I would much rather throw something away today and buy it new tomorrow than keep it around one more minute!
With five kiddos still in the house, I still face a ton of clutter, but . . . at least it's just blocks and Star Wars guys. Not junk mail and outgrown clothes!
You are spot on with your comment!! I keep things that have meaning, or a story behind them. I just don't get too attached. I'm glad you saw the bed nicely made and thanks again for the help putting beds together! That was such a wonderful visit!! Miss you!
Way to go, little guy! You gotta love that kid!
Truth be told, Snarky Belle could be the poster child for "Clutter Free Zones" of America! Even I drive her crazy...I am a reader and I am old. Therefore, I always have a book and glasses near by. If I leave my book and my glasses anywhere other than my "designated reading spot" I always find my book and glasses neatly stacked, silently screaming, "could you please put your glasses and your book away!"...Yep, I noticed! :)
However, I cannot argue with the "don't trash my bed"...nothing better than a neatly tucked, neatly made bed! And yours, is beautiful!!!
About the whole "Swatch" issue...I really hope you and the "babby" (yes, that is correct) can work that out one day...:)
Love ya!
I so know what you mean- there is nothing that I'd cry over if it got lost or broken. I am an anti-hoarder, and sadly I love with a husband who has hoarding tendencies. It's a daily battle about what crosses the threshold of the house. And opening mail by the garbage can- genius! I'm stealing that one.
Like Cheryl, I'm a bit of a collector. Okay, I'm a pretty big collector, but the only things I really care about are the ones with significant meaning behind them.
When something is lost or breaks, I am sad for the moment but get over it quickly. Why? Because the person who loses or breaks it is always dearer to me than the thing itself. (And quite often, they are the ones that gave it to me or helped me choose it...which is what made it a prized possession to begin with!)
I am not that good at disposing of things because I do tend to attach meaning to them. Fortunately, Dave is REALLY good at this, which compensates.
;)
I love your bed too :) It is nice and looks very comfy. I tend to collect things for awhile then ever so often go through the house thinning and throwing away or giving away.
I bet your place always looks pristine.
Hugs
I tend to collect, but LaMar "helps" me get rid of clutter. I've gotten better over the years as I realize they're just things. I did get quite fond of the shoes in your picture. And your bed is gorgeous. My husband calls me the Bed Nazi because I'm so picky about how ours looks, so I totally get it.
I loathe clutter, but unfortunately, I married a clutter maker. On multiple occasions, I've eliminated random bits of paper or whatnot that the man finally needs weeks/months/years after I've tossed it. I've had to let go of some of my agitation over his collection of "junk", but I still try to keep all other parts of the house orderly. The exceptions are his office and the garage. I won't touch either one unless I can't walk in it. Thankfully, I can close the door to both rooms.
I got my big bed and it takes two rolls to get over to Sean. Wah!
